This is the area dedicated to getting Linux computers connected to
the internet using 3G and 2G technology. Here I will cover hardware,
system configuration and any other related stuff. Useful documents: Option GlobeTrotter HowTo (GPRS) Option Fusion HowTo (UMTS/GPRS and WLan) Vodafone 3G HowTo (UMTS/GPRS) COMGT - a 2G/3G datacard utility

Option have made available a GPL'd utility to temporarily disable the ZeroCD. It supports multiple simultaneous devices and combined with the udev scripts works without any configuration. You can find the utility in my forum here

I've just started testing an update to the Nozomi 2.1 drivers. Real world tests look very good. Heathrow is a great location test to show off how a real network operates - a lot of people waiting and nothing better to do than play with their phones. So what 3G speeds do you get when in a busy area? The signal strength was a nice fat 27 on the Vodafone UK network. Using this tool I have recorded averages of 475 kbps with one test achieving 512 kbps - very nice. Finding a location (on a different network) where the signal was only 6 the throughput dropped to around 110 kbps - still very usable but noticably more sluggish with I guess more error correction going on. |

An update to the nozomi drivers has been released incorporating many stability improvements. The fixes should should prevent kernel issues when downloading at high rates. We have also incorporated support for 2.6.14+ kernels. You can find the latest drivers in the forum. |

COMGT is a utility that works with nearly all Option 2G and 3G datacards and helps you integrate them into Linux.
It seemed that the last version of gcom was not as universal as I had hoped. Anyway, it is now updated to version 0.3:
- GlobeTrotter EDGE and Combo EDGE support
- GlobeTrotter 3G and 3G EDGE/HSDPA support.
- New built-in scripts for 2G/3G switching, registration checks and more
- Bug fix for Vodafone 3G SIM pin
- waitfor scripting command works again
- better error checking in scripts
- Beta-version of operator selection external script
- lots of general improvements
Its seems like a good idea so I have also created a forum for gcom Anyway please find the code here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/comgt
[For trademark reasons the program name has been changed from gcom to comgt]. |
