Hi all,
I wrote a complete manual for the Option Globetrotter GT Max 7.2 Ready HSUPA Modem (pccard) on Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10sp1 and sp2.
The manual is also suited for Suse Linux 10.1 , 10.2 and probably also openSUSE 10.3 .I tested the connection with the Option Globetrotter GT Max 7.2 Ready HSUPA succesfully on many different places. The manual (PDF) is in English so it's readable for everyone.
Greetings, Karl

|
|
In the manual I wrote about starting HSOconnect as root. We can start this program as normal user and we can control the serial port, but there is no internet. As soon as we start the program as root everything works great. I was a member of the groups uucp and dialout already, so I don't know where the problem comes from. I try to solve this little problem soon.

Deactivate other Network connections first!
Almost all laptops these days have onboard USB netwok cards. Most of them are wireless.
In case you already have such an USB network connection in your Suse Linux system ACTIVE it's NOT a good idea to insert the Globetrotter pccard in the machine.
If you already have an (a wireless) USB network connection active AND running do not insert the Globetrotter pccard, because the Suse system locks completely.
If you already have an (a wireless) USB network connection active but NOT running the Suse system does not lock when you insert the Globetrotter pccard and everything runs without any problem.
In other words: Before inserting the Globetrotter pccard you have to deactivate the other USB network connection with Networkmanager first.
Hardware buttons.
Laptops with hardware buttons are also a problem, except for those which are supported by Suse Linux by default.
You really have to deactivate the network connection with Networkmanager first, before pushing down the hardware-button
Globetrotter and resolv.conf.
/etc/resolv.conf will be used by almost every network connection. Also in this case it's important that you close other networkconnections first before connecting to the network with the Globetrotter pccard.
Have a nice day,
Karl.

UPDATE: Start HSOconnect as user, not as root
In the manual I wrote about starting HSOconnect as root. (see the screenshot in step 12)
You don't have to do this. Here are the right instructions:
Quick instrucions: Set the UID for /usr/local/bin/hsolinkcontrol
Full instructions (for newbies)
Start, as root, Midnight Commander:
mc [enter]
Navigate to /usr/local/bin/ and select hsolinkcontrol .
Press F9 f h (after another, it's not a keyboard-combination. f=File, h=cHown).
A little window appears on your screen. In there, select the first option:
"set user id (UID)".
Confirm your action (at the bottom of the window)
Close mc with F10
Log out as root by typing:exit [enter] and log out as user (also exit)
Re-configure the icon properties on your desktop if you started HSOconnect as root.
That's it. Start HSOconnect and go online.
Thanks for your help Paul!

|
|
I have the same card and problem with installation on the Ubuntu Hardy 64-bit. Is there any chance to install it on this OS? System is not reacting after insertion of the modem. Only ohci_hcd is trying to do something with the result as attached... I've tried everything (I suppose...):
- hso driver (version 1.2 and 0.7),
- option driver,
- blacklisting the ohci_hcd module (also "options ohci-hcd no_handshake" in the modprobe options file)
lsusb and lspci dont see this device.
Card is working perfect in the Win XP Prof environment on the same computer (brand new Dell D830)
-----------------------------
Card data:
GlobeTrott/er HSUPA Modem
Connector type: PCMCIA
S/N: GE2xxx
firmware: 2.8.0AHd
In the dmesg you can find as follows:
[ 32.981984] ohci_hcd: 2006 August 04 USB 1.1 'Open' Host Controller (OHCI) Driver
[ 32.982035] PCI: Enabling device 0000:04:00.0 (0000 -> 0002)
[ 32.982043] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:04:00.0[A] -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 19
[ 32.982059] PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:04:00.0 to 64
[ 32.982063] ohci_hcd 0000:04:00.0: OHCI Host Controller
[ 32.982086] ohci_hcd 0000:04:00.0: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 8
[ 32.982098] ohci_hcd 0000:04:00.0: irq 19, io mem 0x124000000
[ 32.986686] ohci_hcd 0000:04:00.0: USB HC reset timed out!
[ 32.986691] ohci_hcd 0000:04:00.0: can't start
[ 32.986705] ohci_hcd 0000:04:00.0: startup error -1
[ 32.986707] ohci_hcd 0000:04:00.0: USB bus 8 deregistered
Thanks a lot in advance,
Adam

1. First you have to remove old software installations and modules entirely from your system before trying a new one. That includes all hso drivers and other pakages you installed.
2. After that reboot your system without the pccard.
3. After rebooting you can insert the pccard and use dmesg to see what Ubuntu does with the card. But wait at least 5 seconds or longer before using dmesg. On some systems it takes about 7 seconds or longer until the card is fully loaded the first time. Be patient.
Close all other network connections before inserting the Globetrotter in the machine.
The dmesg output should be the same as the one in the manual.
4. It seems that your system does not recognize the pc card fully. Is this the full dmesg output?
Here is the final pdf from 28 july 2008. I made one little mistake in the manual. That's solved now. There are two versions: Dutch and English.
English version:
http://www.combeon.org/sls/Globetrotter_GT_Max_7.2_Ready_HSUPA_on_sled10sp1.pdf
Dutch version:
http://www.combeon.org/sls/Globetrotter_GT_Max_7.2_Ready_HSUPA_voor_sled10sp1.pdf
Goodluck.

UDEV.RULES CHANGE!!
My system crashed. It was so bad I had to reinstall Sled10 sp1 again.
After testing HSO and testing it again I knew it had something to do with UDEV.
I renamed two rules. The are:
50-pcmcia.rules = rename it to 48-pcmcia.rules
z20_hso-udev.rules = rename it to 49-hso.rules
Yes, it's true. Load 49-hso.rules before 50-udev-default.rules .
Reload the udev rules: udevcontrol reload_rules or reboot your system.
Second: I started using Gnome... This desktop is more stable and user friendly. You can use all programs to connect to the internet without any problem.
And yes, hsoconnect and The GT Max 7.2 Ready are finally working properly.
