Vodafone has now introduced (in Hong Kong) a 3G mobile broadband service using a Huawei E220 USB modem. I know that this site has drivers for Vodafone's PCIMIA version of 3G broadband. I am relatively new to Linux (Ubuntu) and wonder if anyone has experience with the USB version and if they could point me in the right direction. For example do the existing drivers work with this modem?

Thanks, Bryan

Bryan,

I'm afraid this forum will be of very little help to you, as it focuses mostly on the hardware created by the Belgian company "Option".

Having said that, I'm very curious what the Huawei looks like.
Can you post the output of "lsusb -v" when run as root?
It will give a lot of information on what the device actually implements.

We *might* be able to work from there.

The biggest problem here is this:

Quote:
bInterfaceClass 255 Vendor Specific Class
bInterfaceSubClass 255 Vendor Specific Subclass
bInterfaceProtocol 255 Vendor Specific Protocol

This is USB jargon but it boils down to "Huawei wants to do everything by themselves". So there is nousb serial, nor any other regular USB protocol that we can hook into.

This will require a specific hardware driver to work.

I'm sorry for the bad news.

From what I could dig up, it works in Linux just fine after you make the nodes. Apparently, it uses the same usb interface as the pcmcia cards from them. I'm not sure if a modified usb driver is needed here to get the bigger chunks like the option usb driver in the 2.6 kernel does or the Junxion modified usb driver in the 2.4 kernel of which they shared the mods with the Linux community. What freqencies does this operate at in hsdpa? I can't seem to get to the website to check this gizmo out.

modprobe usb-ohci modprobe usb-uhci modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1001 modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1003 mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0 mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1 mknod /dev/ttyUSB2 c 188 2

Ah, my fault.

I forgot that usbserial is always in the "vendor specific" area.

I'm sorry!!!

It also looks like it favors 2.1ghz for the hsdpa band which we don't yet have in the US. The FCC spectrum auctions should be about over here with T-Mobile standing to gain the most so we probably won't be purely a 850mhz and 1.9ghz dual band player here much longer. Unfortunately, it makes antenna design a bit more difficult when you have more than two ranges. That device also does not look to be able to accomodate an external antenna as most cards do so since you have one, does it appear to have a jack? I wonder what chipset they use. Most devices seem to have Qualcomm chipsets in them and I would like to think that Qualcomm has some competition.

No it does not have provision for an external antenna.

Transmission seems to be on 2100 as per following from Huawei website:
Operating frequency
HSDPA/UMTS 2100MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900MHz

Still looking for a solution so any ideas most welcome.

Did you try this?

What will dmesg report when you try this?

(You may need to eject and reinsert the device for events to be generated.)

Tried that but get errors - any ideas?

modprobe usb-ohci
gives error module usb-ohci not found

modprobe usb-uhci
gives error module usb-uhci not found

modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1001
modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1003
mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0
mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1
mknod /dev/ttyUSB2 c 188 2

- for these five instructions I have to use sudo modprobe etc..... they then seem to be accepted but there is no output
