|

I need some help...
I have some problems in using the GlobalTrotter modem integrated in my ASUS notebook (F3Sr), here you can read more information about the problem:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=877298
I read the "GlobeTrotter Family Linux support" on this site but I can't either read the "Serial Letters" as all what I can see of my modem is a small door below the battery pack that holds the SIM. There is nothing written in it, there is only place to insert the SIM.
These are the information I could get from Windows Vista by looking at the System Information report:

(sorry it's in Italian, I can translate what you need)
I can only add I don't have a hardware problem as it works perfectly under Vista, I just don't know how to have it working under Linux (Ubuntu).
I insert the Ubuntu CD, the system starts... now what?
In the link I posted above you also find a couple of screenshot taken from the "network setting" application. I guessed I had to start from there.
I've been using Linux for years (Red Hat and Gentoo) but I never found a HSDPA modem on my road...
Any help would be very much appreciated and I really don't know where to start from to troubleshoot this issue.
Ciao,
Max

I attached the output from dmesg. It would be also useful to me to understand if this modem is seen as a PCMCIA, USB, serial or whatever else modem. This way I could narrow down my search.

And this is the output from 'lspci' and 'ls -alF /dev'.
In the latter there are a lot of 'dialout' devices, this is because the notebook also has a 56Kb PSTN modem.

Hi mpolito1969,
I just read your dmesg and it looks like you have a working HSDPA device and driver. See the section in your dmesg.txt where it writes about 'option' driver and devices /dev/ttyUSB0 to 2. You should be able to use either bare wvdial, or a connection manager like Vodafone's Mobile Connect card driver for linux.
Best regards,
Andrew

Thank you very much for your reply.
I tried with Vodafone's Mobile Connect, it got installed without problems (except for a couple of permission issues on a directory).
I ran it and almost everything was OK: it got automatically configured with my operators data (i.e. the APN), it asked me for a PIN, I gave it, it started and I saw in the bottom of the window appearing the string "Vodafone IT", which means (I guess) it found my operator's network.
I pressed on the "connect" button but nothing happened. No errors shown and no connection established (I could not browse the web with Firefox).
The window didn't change, I pressed several times on the "connect" button but it just didn't do anything.
I ran it again from the command line in the hope I could see some error messages on the console but I couldn'd see anything.
Have you already seen this behaviour? Do you know if there is something like a log file where I can search for error messages?
Unfortunately, I'm using an Ubuntu live CD, which means I'm continously switching between Vista (to connect to the internet) and Linux (to make tests) so troubleshooting the problem is more complicated.
Bye,
Max

Unfortunately there is nothing in /var/log, no file has been updated during my attempts.
If I run 'sudo vodafone-...' and I press on the "connect" button I see a notification windows saying it attempted three times a connection but it couldn't. It suggest there are mistakes in the configuration (but doesn't say anything about where are the configuration files or what options are incorrect) or there is no carrier (I know there is a carrier as I can connect from Vista).
I tried to send an SMS and it worked, I received it on my phone.
I also tried with wvdialconf.
I ran wvdialconf to update the /etc/wvdial.conf file and it made everything without complaining but when I run wvdial it complains the configuration doesn't specify any valid phone number, login name and password. Of course... I don't have any of them.
I don't know what else I could try...
Bye,
Max

I tried again with vwdial, it doesn't work.
I used the following vwdial.conf:
| Quote: |
[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Init3 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"","web.omnitel.it"
Modem Type = USB Modem
Baud = 460800
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
ISDN = 0
Phone = *99***1#
Password = none
Username = none
Stupid Mode = on

I modified one I found on another forum where i'm asking for help. Actually I can't understand the reason to have a "phone" field as I don't have any number to dial in Windows Vista.
You find attached the /var/log/messages and the output from vwdial (log.txt).
Bye,
Max

Hi,
Try changing the username and password to "guest". Everything that you have posted looks ok to me but the PPPD does not complete the session startup.
FYI - The Windows uses an NDIS driver for this card - but the NDIS driver is a wrapper for the PPP interface, it dials the telephone number for you automatically.
Cheers,
Paul

Done it! When I was going to give up...
All the magic was in the "sudo" word. The Vodafone's Mobile Connect application must be ran as root. If you don't it doesn't connect and doesn't give you any suggestion about what the problem is.
So, the right procedure for HSDPA modem GT M378 you find integrated in the F3Sr ASUS notebook is:
1) run the installation program for Vodafone's Mobile Connect application as root user;
2) run the Vodafone's Mobile Connect application as root;
3) accept all the defaults values;
4) click on the "connect" button;
5) enjoy it!
After I succeeded with Vodafone's Mobile Connect software I succeeded also in establishing the connection with vwdial. However, vwdial by itself is not able to start the connection for the first time, the first time you must run the Vodafone's Mobile Connect application, after you have run it once (whether or not you have used root permission) you can use vwdial.
I guess there could be two reasons for this:
1) using vwdial there is no way to send the PIN code of the SIM, so the Vodafone's Mobile Connect application is needed AT LEAST to send the PIN, I guess;
2) probably vwconf doesn't set up the modem correctly. Vodafone's Mobile Connect application maybe sends the right commands after which it is ready to work and also vwdial can use it.
The vwdial.conf file I used is:
| Code: |
[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Init3 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"","web.omnitel.it"
Modem Type = USB Modem
Baud = 460800
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
ISDN = 0
Phone = *99***1#
Password = none
Username = none
Stupid Mode = on

"web.omnitel.it" is my provider's APN.
"Stupid Mode"must be set to off otherwise it never succeds in making the ppp login.
I must thank you all for the support you gave me. I hope my experience can be useful to someone else.
Now another question. I'd like to use vwdial so that I can make my own connection script.
Does anybody know how to send a PIN to the SIM using vwdial?
Ciao,
Max

I am happy to hear of your success
The command for sending a PIN is:
AT+CPIN=1234
In principle you can use wvdial to send this but you might have some timing problems. You can create a wvdial script to do it. This blog entry shows you how to add multiple configurations:
http://www.pharscape.org/content/view/44/53/
Notice that the default entry does not have a telephone number. All other entries inherit the Default settings so you don't want your PIN setting entry to dial the Internet.
You can also use comgt like this:
COMGTPIN=1234
export COMGTPIN
comgt -s PIN
Cheers,
Paul
