My vodafone datacard works well under openSUSE 10.2, but I'm unable to switch off the "optimization" (causes reduced quality of images etc.). Is there a parameter for the modem's init-string?

Sorry, I do not think that is possible. The optimization is done in the Vodafone network Internet server.
